What Do I Ask My Child When They Are Reading?

When reading with your child it is important to ask them questions to check their understanding.  Your child should be able to retell the story using words like “first”, “next”, “last” and then answer questions about what happened.  Here are some questions for you to ask your child while they are reading and after they are finished.

Before Reading

  • What do you think this book will be about?

  • What do you know about the topic of this book? (Have you ever been camping/ seen a ghost/been to a farm, etc)

  • Does the topic of this book remind you of anything you know or have done?

During Reading

  • What do you think will happen next?  What make you think this?

  • Why do you think the character did __________________? How do you know?

  • What must have happened here that the author didn’t tell us?

  • What emotions is the character feeling? How do you know?

  • Has anything like this ever happened to you? Does it remind you of something?

  • Is there anything you’re wondering about right now?

After Reading

  • Why do you think…?

  • Why did the character…?

  • What lesson do you learn from thus book? What clues told you this?

  • How does the character’s feelings change from the beginning to the end of the book?

  • What is the problem of this story? How does the character fix the problem?

  • Describe the setting of the book.  Where does the story take place?

  • How do you know this is the setting?

  • What are the main events that occur in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?

Principal’s Memo

Dear P.S. 120 Families,

Many of you have been contacted by school staff over the past two weeks regarding the creation of your child’s NYC Schools Account (NYCSA). NYCSA is an important app that helps you track your child’s education and receive report cards, promotion letters and other notifications from the Department of Education. Ideally, each parent/guardian should sign up for an individual account so that all caretakers have access to this information. I would like to sincerely thank those of you who have taken the time to create a NYCSA account for your child, and offer assistance to anyone who has not yet created an account. Please email Ms. Momoh (jmomoh@schools.nyc.gov) if you would like help setting up your NYCSA account.

Parents who hold NYCSA accounts are eligible to run for a seat on a Community or Citywide Education Council, and help shape policies and priorities for NYC schools. There is one council for each of NYC’s 32 community school districts, plus four citywide councils. You can learn more about the2021 Community and Citywide Council Elections here, and log into NYCSA to apply.

Additionally, as messaged on ParentSquare on Wednesday, all parents have the opportunity to provide feedback to the Department of Education by taking the Fall 2020 School Experience survey. If you have not already, please click hereto read more and to take the survey before TODAY’S deadline, February 5th!

Thank you for everything you are doing to support your child this year.

Sincerely,
Robert Marino

Principal’s Memo

Dear P.S. 120 Families,

I want to thank you for your assistance with the iReady Diagnostic Assessment #2, administered earlier this week. As of Wednesday afternoon, 96% of students completed their Reading assessment, and 94% of students completed their Math assessment. Teachers are working with the remaining students to remedy any device issues and complete the assessments as soon as possible during small group time.

At the end of the assessment window, we will have individualized data to share with you showing your child’s progress in Reading and Math. This data will help you know how your child is progressing according to grade-level standards, and will help your child’s teacher know what standards and skills to review to support and/or challenge your child appropriately.

There is another component of the iReady system that I want to make all parents aware of. Your child should engage in daily “MyPath” Reading and Math assignments. These are fun and personalized assignments that target the skills your child is working to master, based on his/her results on the iReady diagnostic assessments. It is recommended that children work on “My Path” assignments for 30 minutes a week in each subject (although your child can do more!) If your child is not currently using “My Path,” please be sure to access it regularly:

  • On a laptop/computer: Log into TeachHub, then select the Clever app, then the iReady app

  • On an iPad: Select the iReady app

  • You can visit https://i-readycentral.com/familycenter/ for more information and resources on how you can support your child’s use of this amazing program at home.

Your child’s teacher will begin sending iReady reminders and assignments using Google Classroom, so that all students and parents are aware of these wonderful iReady resources!

This program, when combined with the quality instruction your child is receiving at P.S. 120, can prove to be very useful in closing gaps and helping students both catch up, and move ahead, with the standards, My son, Robert, uses a similar program and we have seen tremendous progress in a short period of time. Please stay on top of your child’s daily iReady usage.

Sincerely,
Robert Marino

Principal’s Memo

Dear P.S. 120 Families,

Yesterday on ParentSquare, you were messaged about the upcoming iReady Diagnostic Assessment #2. All students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 will be taking the Math and ELA iReady assessment Monday and Tuesday, with makeup windows on Wednesday as needed. Giving a second round of the iReady Diagnostic Assessment in these core subjects helps us track each child’s progress since September, and set goals for the remainder of the year. Please note that iReady scores DO NOT affect your child’s grades in any way. After the assessment, your child’s teacher will have individualized data on what your child knows and can do; this information helps the teacher plan targeted lessons to support your child in the coming months. For this reason, it is very important that you help your child access the iReady platform at his/her testing time, but that you DO NOT assist your child in any way with the answers. The best way you can help your child is to ensure he/she gets plenty of rest, eats a healthy breakfast before the assessment, and by sharing encouraging phrases along the way (For example, “This is challenging, but I know you’ll do your best!”). Please see the iReady resources below to help your family prepare for Diagnostic Assessment #2 next week.

Sincerely,
Robert Marino

iReady Diagnostic Assessment #2 - January 25th, 26th, 27th

Dear P.S. 120 Families,

Next week, we will be administering the iReady Diagnostic Assessment #2 to all students in Kindergarten to Grade 5. On Monday 1/25 and Tuesday 1/26, your child will take the ELA and Math assessments remotely, with a makeup window on Wednesday 1/27. Your child's teacher will communicate the specific testing schedule for your child's class, which will allow children to test in small groups with the teacher's assistance. We are asking for your assistance as well to help your child navigate to the iReady Diagnostic Assessment #2.

Why is my child taking the iReady Diagnostic Assessment again?
Collecting a second round of data helps us see how your child has progressed from the beginning of the school year, and gives us a current data point to create targeted instruction for your child moving forward.

Will my child's iReady Diagnostic Assessment results affect his/her grades?
No - iReady is a formative assessment (used to inform instruction) and does NOT affect your child's grades. It is important to allow your child to take the test independently, to show exactly what he/she knows and can do.

How can I help my child get ready for the iReady Diagnostic Assessment?
Please see the iReady family resource center: https://i-readycentral.com/familycenter/

Principal’s Memo

Dear P.S. 120 Families,

“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve.”

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I wanted to share these quotations from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with you as a timely reminder of the importance of community. Particularly at a time when we are confronted with so many challenges, helping others around us can be a way to stay positive and productive. As you enjoy Monday’s day off of school, consider it a “day on” to safely reconnect with loved ones and serve others in your community. For more resources and volunteer opportunities for Monday’s National Day of Service, please see the “Celebrations” section below.

At the same time, with the rise of positive COVID-19 cases across the city and nation, I want to urge everyone in the P.S. 120 community to continue following health and safety precautions to keep you and your loved ones well. Please limit your outings and social gatherings, maintain social distancing, wear a mask and practice frequent hand washing.

As always, please reach out to your child’s teacher, the main office, and/or any one of the school administrators should you need assistance or support. We are here to help you in any way possible.

Sincerely,
Robert Marino

    • February PTA Meeting: Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 10th at 4:15 PM.

  • iReady Diagnostic Assessment: We are preparing for the second round of iReady testing, which provides us with important data regarding your child’s progress in ELA and Math. Please see these resources for Preparing your child for the iReady Diagnostic:

    • iReady Diagnostic window # 2 is 1/25/21-2/10/21. Individual teachers will communicate administration times and periods with their classes.

    • Here is how you can assist your child if they are taking the diagnostic remotely:

      • Step 1: Watch this video from iReady to familiarize yourself with the Diagnostic and how to best support your child.

      • Step 2: Get organized by finding a quiet space for your student to take the test and confirming your technology is working properly.

      • Step 3: Motivate your child by explaining how doing their best will help their teachers know how to teach them better.

      • Step 4: Support, but do not help by encouraging your child to stay focused and try their best. Please do not help your child with the answers.

      • Step 5: Celebrate your child’s effort once you have confirmed they have completed the assessment.

    • It is extremely important that you help your child navigate to and through the assessment, but that you do not help with the answers. As a reminder, iReady is an adaptive assessment that will modify the difficulty level of each question based on whether your child answered correctly or incorrectly on the previous question. Your child should answer the assessment questions independently so his/her teachers know what your child understands and can do by him/herself.

Principal’s Memo

Dear P.S. 120 Families,

Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays as well as the opportunity to relax together with your family.
This week, all students returned remotely and our building reopened for in-person instruction on Tuesday. Our Blended Learning students are coming five-days-a-week now, and daily remote instruction continues for our Remote Learning students.

I have received questions from a few families who wish to switch to in-person instruction. Please understand that while in-person students may switch to remote instruction at any time, as per DOE regulations, the change from remote to in-person is currently not allowed. If at any point Mayor De Blasio or Schools Chancellor Carranza open up additional opt-in windows this year, we will let the school community know immediately.

In the meantime, I would like to encourage parents to engage in PTA meetings, parent workshops and Parent Chats. If you are interested in participating in an upcoming Parent Chat, please fill out this survey. These are opportunities for you to meet with other families, receive support, and provide ideas and feedback on school initiatives. Our goal is to work together so that we can provide your family with the best experience, and your child with the best education, at P.S. 120.

Sincerely,
Robert Marino

Happy New Year

Good afternoon, PS 120 parents and staff. It has been a challenging year and I wanted to take a moment to congratulate you for the effort you have put into tackling the pandemic and all that it brought concerning our school and students. I look forward to a safe, productive, and fruitful 2021!!

There have been two recent cases of COVID19 in our school community over the last two days. These cases are unrelated to each other and the DOE has determined there will be no action taken concerning our school. You will receive a notification regarding these incidents and I did not want you to be alarmed.

Have a safe and Happy New Year!!!

P.S. 120 Parent Weekly Bulletin - 12/18/20

Principal’s Memo

Dear P.S. 120 Families,

As we count down the final days of 2020, I will lead the P.S. 120 staff in a “state of the school” data presentation to determine our students’ strengths and challenges, and to set instructional goals for 2021. Together we are concentrating on the Priority Learning Standards to ensure that each grade is focusing on the most crucial academic content, and is on pace to cover this content thoroughly by June. Although many students nationwide are experiencing “learning loss” due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at P.S. 120 we are doing our best to prioritize English Language Arts and Mathematics instruction to help your child reach his/her fullest potential.

When school resumes on January 4th, students in our Blended Learning (in-person) cohort will no longer follow the alternating A/B schedule for in-person instruction; instead, Blended Learning students will now come to school 5-days-a-week. Our Fully Remote cohort will continue learning from home 5-days-a-week. With this shift, it is possible that some classes/classrooms and teachers will be changed as we program our staff to best serve all P.S. 120 students. As I wrote to you last week, you will be contacted personally if your child will be changing classes, and all of the sending/receiving teachers will be collaborating closely to support your child.

As we look forward to Winter Recess in just a few short days, I would like to wish you and your family a restful, relaxing break and a happy, healthy New Year!

Sincerely,
Robert Marino

A Message from Chancellor Carranza Regarding the Possible Snow Storm on Thursday

Dear Families,

I hope you are safe and well. As we head into winter, it’s likely we will have inclement weather that in an ordinary year would cause all schools to close for teaching and learning. This year, if a snowstorm or other weather demands that school buildings close, all schools will still conduct remote learning on that day. All students will be expected to log on and engage with their work from home as they do on other days when they learn remotely. Middle and high school students who are already learning remotely every day are expected to attend school remotely, regardless of the weather.

The ability to teach and learn remotely across the system allows us to continue learning despite inclement weather closures. You will still be notified as usual when we are closing buildings due to weather, but these will not be days off from learning.

Your school will stay in close communication with you regarding the upcoming snowstorm predicted to affect New York City beginning the evening of Wednesday, December 16. Please note that extra meals will be available on Tuesday, December 15, and Wednesday, December 16 to take home.

Please do not hesitate to contact your principal if you have any questions.

Sincerely, Richard A. Carranza
Chancellor
New York City Department of Education

Upcoming Lockdown Drills

Dear PS 120 Families,
I am writing to inform you P.S. 120 implements protocols that focus on emergency preparedness. Under the city-wide General Response Protocol (GRP), we will be conducting drills throughout the year that are designed to help prepare our school community for three different types of response to emergencies that may occur: evacuation, shelter-in, and lockdown.

On Tuesday, December 15th at 9:25am and Friday, December 18th at 9:25am, the staff and students at PS 120 will be participating in a lockdown drill. The purpose of this drill is to prepare our students and staff for any emergency that may occur where it may be necessary for us to lockdown the building.

Safety is our top priority at P.S. 120. We conduct drills because we want students and staff members to be safe as well as to develop an awareness of their roles in these various scenarios. Additionally, all families are reminded to update the Digital Emergency Contact Cards should any information change during the school year. I also encourage you to take advantage of the resources that are available to keep you informed if there is an emergency at a school. Families can register with Notify NYC (https://a858-nycnotify.nyc.gov/notifynyc/) to receive information via text and email concerning emergency events. You can also call 311 for additional information about any school during an emergency.
Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the upcoming lockdown drill.

Letter from our Chancellor, Richard Carranza.

Good afternoon PS 120 families. I hope you are enjoying your weekend, even with the foggy weather.

Attached, please find a letter from our Chancellor, Richard Carranza.

Translations are available at schools.nyc.gov/messagesforfamilies.

Richard Carranza, Chancellor

Dear Families,

What an exciting week this has been, reopening our school buildings for in-person instruction after this recent brief closure. I want to thank our students and families, our teachers, principals, and school staff for a safe and smooth reopening. I know it hasn’t been easy, but public education is critical to our city’s, and nation’s, future, and it is why we continue to do everything in our power to keep our school communities thriving.

With support from all corners of New York City, we have been able to bring students in 3-K through fifth grade, and students in all grade levels in District 75 schools, back into classrooms. This is an important step in fulfilling our pledge to you: to provide a safe, secure environment in which your children can learn and grow. And a quick reminder: for blended learning to work best for everyone, we need your child to show up to school on their scheduled in-person days. Blended learning students in grades 6 through 12 in district 1–32 schools, including those participating in District 75 Inclusion Programs, will continue to learn remotely at this time.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 is still very much with us. Given the ongoing fight against a citywide resurgence, please note that we have changed our in-school testing protocol. In order to keep our buildings open, we now require mandatory, weekly in-school testing for COVID-19 for a randomly selected portion of staff and students in grades 1 and higher.

And this is critical: If your child returns to school for in-person instruction without a consent form on file, principals and school staff will contact you to obtain consent. After that, students without consent forms on file, who do not have an approved or pending medical or disability-based exemption, must be moved to fully remote instruction.

In this Update for Families, you will find information on:

  • What you need to know about mandatory, in-school testing

  • How to submit consent for in-school random testing

  • What to do if your child has recently traveled

  • What you need to know about exemptions from in-school testing

  • How to apply for kindergarten for the 2021–2022 school year

  • How to learn more about elementary admissions

  • How to participate in Parent University, a new platform offering families on-demand courses and resources on a host of subjects.

Because so much uncertainty comes with this pandemic, we remain committed to our time-honored traditions, which remind us that we are a community. One of those is our annual Big Apple Awards, recognizing outstanding teachers and college and career counselors. This year, it feels especially important to honor the teachers or counselors who have made a difference in your child’s life. Nominate an educator by January 10, 2021 by visiting the Big Apple Awards webpage on our site.

As always, I am grateful for your flexibility and patience as we continue our journey together through this unprecedented year. There is no doubt that Covid-19 has affected our children—academically, socially, and emotionally, and we are already looking ahead to the next school year. This week, the Mayor and I introduced the 2021 Student Achievement Plan to bring our schools back stronger than ever next fall. Working with our educators and all of you, we will create a roadmap rooted in healing and learning. I’ll be sharing more on this in the months to come.

I know that if we all do our part, we can ensure a strong, supportive education for every child every day—no matter where they are learning.

What You Need to Know about Mandatory, In-School Testing

In order for your child to return to in-person learning, you must submit the consent form for in-school COVID-19 testing by the first day your child returns to their school building.

  • Testing will happen weekly for a random selection of staff and students in your child’s school.

  • Any student in grade 1 or higher returning to school buildings must submit a consent form for COVID-19 testing in school by their first day back in school buildings.

  • 3-K, pre-K, and kindergarten students are excluded from random testing.

  • The test is quick, safe, and easy. If you have not submitted a consent form and your child is learning in person, you must do so right away.

How to Submit Consent for In-School Random Testing

Submitting consent to have your child tested for COVID-19 in school is quick and easy. Even if you have already submitted consent, we ask you to do so again to ensure your student has the latest consent form on file.

There are two easy ways to submit:

1) Fill out the form online using a New York City Schools Account (NYCSA).

If you already have a NYCSA account linked to your student(s): Log in, click your student’s name, click “Manage Account,” and then when a dropdown menu appears, click “Consent Forms.” Read the page, and then choose the consent option at the end for your student.

If you do not already have a NYCSA account: You can create one right away! If you have an account creation code from your school, you can create a full account in approximately five minutes, and then provide consent as described above. If you do not have an account creation code from your school, you can still provide your consent right away by clicking “Manage Consent” under “COVID-19 Testing” and filling out your and your child’s information to provide consent.

2) Print and sign the attached form and bring it to your child’s school on the first day they are back in the school building. A printable PDF file is available in ten languages at COVID-19 Testing for Students and Staff.

What to Do if Your Child Has Recently Traveled

  • If your child has recently traveled outside of New York to a place on the State’s travel advisory list they must quarantine for 14 days.

  • They also have the option to test out of quarantine based on the State’s guidelines: coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-travel-advisory(Open external link).

  • You or your child should continue to complete the health questionnaire daily.

What You Need to Know about Exemptions from In-School Testing

Exemptions will only be granted in certain limited cases, and two types of exemption request forms are available at COVID-19 Testing for Students and Staff:

  • A form for students who need a medical exemption due to a health condition that would make it unsafe to undergo testing (e.g., facial trauma, nasal surgery). This form must be signed by a physician and be submitted with supporting medical documentation.

  • A form for students with disabilities who cannot be safely tested in school due to the nature of their disability. Students with an approved disability-based exemption will be expected to get tested outside of school.

P.S. 120 Parent Weekly Bulletin - 12/11/20

Principal’s Memo

Dear P.S. 120 Families,

This week, we reopened our school building for blended learning instruction; additionally, we welcomed the students who transitioned in-person from fully remote instruction as a result of the Blended Learning Opt-In window. It feels good to be back!

Last week, I communicated to you that we were beginning to plan for 5-day instruction when possible for blended learning students. As you may have heard in the news, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chancellor Richard Carranza recently announced that schools must transition to a five-day-a-week instructional model for those students who are already programmed for in-person instruction. We are excited to announce that we will transition to a five-day-a-week instructional model for blended learning students beginning on Monday, January 4th, 2021. Blended families can look out for a separate email and letter backpacked home with more information about this transition. Students in our fully remote cohort will continue to log in daily for remote instruction at home.

Any time we are asked by the city to make major staffing/schedule changes, such as the move to five-day-a-week in-person instruction, this does tend to involve a few teacher/class changes for some students. We do understand that in a year full of uncertainty, changes such as this can be difficult for all children, but especially elementary students. I assure you that you will be contacted personally if your child will be changing classes, and our grade teams are collaborating closely to ensure that if this is the case, pertinent information about your child’s academic progress and social-emotional wellbeing are shared so that she/he is supported.

I hope you enjoy a fun and relaxing weekend with your family.

Sincerely,
Robert Marino
