Fifth Grade Goals

 

 

Goals March 2018

ELA-
Reading -
Students will be able to ...
-build reading comprehension through the use of close reading strategies while tackling complex texts
-build academic vocabulary acquisition through the use of various word play strategies
-identify arguments and counter-arguments by looking at language and transitions
-determine different points of view on historical topics
-explore the essential question of How did European exploration impact Native American cultures in the 15th century?

Writing -
-explore Persuasive Writing genre
-write persuasive essay on Google Classroom with argument and counter-argument with evidence from various texts to support points
-self- and peer-assess to support personal growth

Math -

-students will develop fluency with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions.

Social Studies -
European Exploration
-Investigate the motivations of different European explorers in the Western Hemisphere
-Examine the interactions between the Native Americans and Europeans
- Describe the results of the trade of goods to the Americas
-Describe the dynamics of the movement of people
-Explore trade routes to understand the importance of waterways


Goals February 2018

Math-
Fluency with Whole Numbers and Decimals, students will be able to extend division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole numbers and decimal operations. 

Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators, students will have developed fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and will have developed understanding of multiplication and division of fractions.

Reading - 

Students will be able to ...

-build reading comprehension through the use of close reading strategies while tackling complex texts

-build academic vocabulary acquisition through the use of various word play strategies

-identify cause and effect relationships and use cause and effect language frames in writing

-explore the essential question of How can immigration lead to conflict? by reading a variety of texts

 

Writing

-explore Informational Writing genre

-research Civil Rights activist

-write essay with subtopics reflecting information learned about topic

-include engaging introduction and concise conclusion

-self- and peer-assess to support personal growth

Math

By the end of Chapters 4 and 5, Multiply Decimals and Fluency with Whole Numbers and Decimals, students will be able to extend division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations.
