Sample Reading Questions to Support Your Child’s Understanding of What They Read
Here are some questions that can be adapted to any text that your child is reading. By asking your child questions about what they are reading you are supporting their reading and overall enjoyment of the stories that they choose.
It is not expected that you ask every question every night after they read. By choosing two or three questions to ask your child every night, you will be helping to support their developing comprehension.
Sample Reading Questions Checklist:
Tell me the important parts of the story? What happened in the beginning, middle, and end?
Is this story full of facts? If so, tell me about the fact that you found to be the most interesting.
Where does the story take place? What time of day did it mostly take place?
Who is the main character in the story? How are you similar to this character? How are you different from this character?
Was there a problem in the story? If so, what is the problem?
What was the solution to the problem in the story?
How would you change the solution to the story?
Would you recommend this story to another classmate? Why or why not?
